I know a remote job sounds really good…  no transport fares, more flexibility, freedom to work from anywhere but… remote work comes with its own set of challenges.

Let’s go through what it takes to succeed in a remote career, especially if you’re based in Africa and then you’ll let me know if you’re TRULY prepared.

  1. Self-Discipline: Working remotely means there’s no manager physically and figuratively standing over your shoulder. You’ll need to be self-driven, disciplined, and organized.

Are you someone who can stay focused and get work done even with distractions?

It’s important to remember that while remote work offers flexibility, it also requires a strong sense of responsibility. You’ll be managing your time, setting your own boundaries, and holding yourself accountable.

  1. Digitally Literate: A remote job is, by nature, digital. You’ll need reliable internet access, a place to work, and the necessary gadgets and tools to  work with your team online.

Are you comfortable using video conferencing, project management tools, or collaboration apps/software?

For some, this can be a challenge in areas where internet may not be so reliable.

But with determination and the right setup, it’s possible to make it work. Being digitally ready also means having some technical knowledge.

  1. Self Motivation: Remote work can be isolating, especially if you’re used to a traditional, busy office environment normally.

Are you comfortable working independently for long periods?

You’ll need to find ways to stay motivated and engaged without the energy of a physical team around you.

Community is still very important though, which is why we are committed to building communities of Africans in remote work. Knowing you’re part of a wider group of people working toward similar goals can make all the difference.

  1. Communication Skills: In a remote job, clear and quick communication is a MUST. You’ll be working with people across time zones, cultures and languages, so your ability to communicate well can make or break your success.

Are you ready to express your ideas clearly in writing? Can you ask for what you need, give feedback, and keep your team updated?

Building these communication skills is part of what we emphasize in our training, because I know how vital it is to succeed remotely.

  1. Continous Learning: The digital world is constantly changing… You and I know that.

If you’re truly ready for a remote job, you’ll need to commit to keep learning.

What this may mean to you may be mastering new tools or getting better in your digital skills or staying updated on  news around your industry… Just stay curious and adaptable. This is especially important if you’re aiming to succeed in the global marketplace… your skills have to stay sharp to remain competitive.

  1. Support Network: When you’re working remotely, building connections matters even more.

Having a network of other remote workers like we do at Remote Tribe Africa makes a whole lot of difference… people you can exchange ideas with, lean on for support, or just chat with.

One of our goals with Remote Tribe Africa is to create a bubbling and active community that supports each other, where we can grow together and overcome the unique challenges of remote work in Africa… TOGETHER!

I really believe that Remote work is a powerful path, but it’s not a one-size-fits-all solution. As Africans, we have the chance now to redefine the narrative and lead in the digital economy. But to do that, we need to be ready, resilient, and proactive.

Are you prepared to invest in the skills, discipline, and network-building required? If you’re truly ready, there’s a world of opportunity waiting.

And remember, you don’t have to do it alone… Remote Tribe Africa is here to help you navigate this journey and support you in becoming a successful remote professional.

Let’s make sure that when you step into remote work, you’re not just prepared, but truly trained and empowered to SUCCEED.
